Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management will have articles on global warming for Kamyar Keighobody. The topic brings up over 8,000 articles so Kamyar will want to focus the search. Engineering Village has 215 articles on robotics and ethics. Students should type robotics on line one of the search box and ethics on line 2.

While music-recording companies have been fighting people who illegally share songs, book publishers are looking to expand file-sharing for college students with print-related disabilities.
AccessText, a new service that rolled out a beta version this week, has created an online database that makes it simpler for disability-student services at colleges to track down alternative forms of course materials from book publishers. When electronic versions don't exist for a particular book, the college would get permission to scan the pages so a student could either make the font larger, or use other text-to-speech or refreshable Braille reading devices.

Bruce Hildebrand, executive director for higher education at the Association of American Publishers, says the new service will maximize resources and get students materials faster.

Dawn V. Adams, digital-media-accessibility specialist at the Alternative Media Access Center at the University of Georgia, has been the first person to try out AccessText. With the new program, she says she is able to get books easier than she has in the past, and the turnaround for receiving an answer from a book publisher is as fast as before, if not faster.

"It’s streamlining the work that I do," says Ms. Adams, who serves more than 877 students throughout the University System of Georgia. "All I have to do is go to one Web site for five different publishers and click a few buttons. It’s a really big timesaver."

Baltimore, Maryland (June 25, 2009): The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) and the American Council of the Blind (ACB) filed suit today against Arizona State University (ASU) to prevent the university from deploying Amazon’s Kindle DX electronic reading device as a means of distributing electronic textbooks to its students because the device cannot be used by blind students. Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said: “Given the highly-advanced technology involved, there is no good reason that Amazon’s Kindle DX device should be inaccessible to blind students. Amazon could have used the same text-to-speech technology that reads e-books on the device aloud to make its menus accessible to the blind, but it chose not to do so.

The Auraria Library has acquired a new DVD set, Idioms and phrases in American Sign Language. This five DVD series is excellent for deaf students as well as interpreters, teachers, and parents. What's New? March 2009

In 2009 the L3 Literacy Lab at the Center for Hearing, Speech and Language will be open to adults during the day and after school for younger students. Visitors will have access to software such as: FastForWord, a remarkable program to increase reading levels; Interactive Metronome, a computer program which coordinates headphones, hand and foot sensors, and music to improve motor planning, sequencing, and timing skills; the Brain Fitness Program to address processing changes that occur with age; and L.A.C.E., a listening and auditory enhancement training computer program. 100,000 Digitized Books!

The Auraria Library recently made available 100,000 digitized books through its online catalog, Skyline. These books can be accessed directly from the catalog. The Auraria Library was the first library in the nation to load these books. The books are open-access so anybody can read them.

Reserve Readings in the Library

For years, professors have been sharing their favorite readings with students through the library's reserve program. By now, many of those readings are photocopies-of-photocopies-of-photocopies. This isn't all that great for sighted students but it is really bad for those using screen readers. Since professors don't use reading software, I am sure they have no idea. You can help spread the word by letting your instructors know that if they plan to share readings, a high-quality electronic article is better than a physical copy and that HTML or Word is easier for remote access than PDF.

The Auraria Library can show you how to use the adaptive technology of your choice to find books, articles, and more. Don’t be handicapped by ignorance! Easy one-hour tutoring sessions are available as well as individual research appointments for specific topics or assignments.

After Hours computer with adaptive software and Magnavision are available in the library. Photocopying assistance is available at the Clicks! Center in the library. A Beginning Guide

At the library home page http://library.auraria.edu navigate to the first edit box captioned “search the library’s web site”. All the shortcuts listed below begin at this box.

Audio books At the library home page http://library.auraria.edu go to the box captioned “search the library’s website”. Enter the word “eaudiobooks” (spelled as one word) in the edit box and hit the “go” button. Select the link titled “audiobooks.html” Next, click on the link for Net Library digital eaudiobooks”. On the Net Library page select the link “eaudiobooks”. There will be a pull down menu to select the type of search you want—title, author, keyword or subject. For example, select author and enter Asimov, Isaac. Select the book you want to read and click on “download this eaudiobook”. You are all set! You will even have a choice of CD quality or radio quality.

E-Books from Net Library (you provide the sound with your screen reader) Follow the instructions above. When you arrive at the Net Library page you will hear “basic search”. There is a pull-down menu to select the type of search you want—author, title, subject, or keyword. Enter your search. Select the book you want to read and click on the link for “view this ebook”. Just as with a hard copy title, you may not find the book you are looking for because the library has not purchased it. It does not mean you are searching incorrectly. Net Library also has a link to free e-books and to some electronic full text journals.

Print Books (shortcut in progress)

Magazine and Journal Articles A database called Academic Search Premier, an Ebsco product, is a good starting place to perfect your skills. It is a very user friendly,multi-topic index and has lots of full text, much of it in text-reader-friendly HTML format. Begin at the library home page at the edit box captioned “search the library’s website”. Type Academic Search Premier and hit the go button or enter key. Go to the link provided to open the database. Select “preferences” and turn off “display auto complete keyword search suggestions”. Get out of the preference box. Listen for the word “Find”. It will be followed by an edit box (search box). After entering the search term of your choice the cursor will take you to a pull down menu called “select a field”. Just ignore this—leave it at its default setting and skip over it to continue. There will be two more free text edit boxes just like the first. In total, you can enter up to three keywords or search terms. Because they are linked with the word “and” it will make a cohesive search. When you have entered up to 3 terms, you can tab forward to “refine search” and “limit your results”. There is a box you will want to mark for full text. Hit the “search” button when you are ready. Magazine and journal articles will pop up in bibliographic format. You will hear the article’s author, the article title, the journal in which it appeared, and so forth. After the bibliographic entry there will be a link captioned “full text”. You must click on “full text” to get the whole article. Sometimes the service will give you HTML text, sometimes it will give you PDF, and sometimes it will give you a choice. After you have opened up the article, you can read it, save it, send it to your email or print it. When you are finished, a link at the top of the article titled “result list” will take you back to your list of articles. Searching note: Academic Search Premier and the other article databases work on a descending search. The more words you put into the search, the less you will get. If you are getting too few results, take some words away. Use all 3 search lines if you need them. Don’t try to stuff all your keywords on one line or you will only confuse the computer.

Newspapers (shortcut in progress)

Statistics At the library home page http://library.auraria.edu go to the edit box captioned “search the library’s website”. Type in the word statistical and hit the go button. Navigate to the link titled “databases and indexes” and click on it. Next, click on the link titled “LexisNexis Statistical”. Now select the link captioned “search abstracts”. Just like Academic Search Premier, there are 3 blank boxes where you can enter up to 3 terms. Just like Academic Search Premier, leave the pull down menu at its default setting which in this case reads “all fields”. The page will offer you a whole bunch of choices for limiting your statistics. You could ask for statistics by age, race, income, state, et cetera. For the beginning researcher, I would suggest you skip over all of this and just hit the search key near the bottom of the page. For example, if you typed blind in box one and United States in box two and hit the search button, you would get 21 data sets. Select the one you like and click on the “go to abstract” link. Lexis will tell you exactly where the statistics came from, give you the bibliographic information to site the source in your bibliography, and then Jaws will read you the text where the statistics appear. Sometimes, Lexis will even give you an additional link to the complete full text document from which the statistics were extracted.

Colorado Health Information Dataset and Colorado Health Resources has information on pandemic readiness in Colorado for Wendy Mayoros. She simply needs to type "pandemic" in the search box.
Denver Department of Health has information too. She simply needs to type "pandemic". Public Administration/Affairs has articles on municipalities though they are not limited to Denver. Wendy should type "pandemic" on line 1 of the search box and "preparedness" on line 2.

Joe Weir will like PubMed Central. It has 65 articles using the search "universal health care and Costa Rica". InfoNation will have health care statistics for Costa Rica that can be compared with up to 6 other nations at a time. Box 1--select"socioeconomic grouping", box 2--select "country grouping" "high human development", box 3--select Costa Rica. Then you will have a choice of many pull-down graphs to choose from. United Nations Statistical Databases will have statistics by typing "health and Costa Rica". Nation Master will also have information by typing "Costa Rica and health".

PsycINFO has too many articles on substance abuse treatment programs for Todd Andrews. He might want to think of a way to narrow his topic.

USASearch http://usasearch.gov/ has some excellent resources on diabetes forChristina Phoukee.

PubMed Central has too many articles on neurology clinics so I used "outpatient neurology clinics" for John DuPont's search.

SportDiscus has 43 articles on hippotherapy for Danika Frunz. PubMed Central also has some articles on the topic. GuideStar has information about nonprofit programs that use horses.

CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health) has more than 400 full text articles on geriatric nutrition for Crystal Fulmer. She should enter both words on line one of the search box since it is considered a subject phrase.

Biological and Biomedical Journal Literature has too many articles on allografts for Seth Hahn. He will have to add another term to line 2 of the search to limit the topic. For example allografts and bone surgery, etc.

Journals@Ovid has 169 articles on AIDS Clinics for Jamie McCleary. Jamie should mark the boxes for both "journals" and "medical collections full text". On the blank line Jamie can enter AIDS Clinics. http://www.aids.gov is a clearinghouse for AIDS information.

Business Insights will have a dozen articles on private hospitals for Patrick Smith. He should put quotation marks around "private hospitals". General Business File will have 11 articles. He should type "private hospitals and administration". PubMed Central will have 1,200 articles. He should type "private hospitals and administration".

Colorado Health Resources will have good links to information for health care reform in Colorado for Anna Mapes. Colorado Health Information Dataset will have statistics for her research. She can enter "health insurance" in the search box at the top of the page and get many articles. Colorado General Assembly is a keyword searchable site where she can look for Colorado bills and legislation about health care.

Public Administration/Affairs will have 223 articles for Kate Lof on health care reform and insurance. She should enter "health care reform" on line one of the search box and "health insurance" on line 2.

Samantha Fiorini will want to look at CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health) for her topic of the nursing shortage. In this case "nursing shortage" is a distinct term so both words stay together on line one of the search--Jen does not have to split them out. There are 1,876 full text articles. Jen could add a second line to the search to focus it. For example, adding the word "pediatric" to line two would help narrow the search. Medical and Nursing Collection Full Text has 2,794 full text articles on the nursing shortage.

Librarians Internet Index http://lii.org/pub/topic/health is a clearinghouse of health websites. Alt HealthWatch will have many articles on alternative medicine and alternative therapies for Kyle Huxford, Karen Lanigan, Dalyn Olmstead, and Amanda Berthod.

Amy Marshall should look at Nation Master (United Nations). There are many really excellent full text entries on healthcare in other countries. This topic is too broad so she might want to focus on a specific country to compare and contrast with the U.S.. For example, She could type "healthcare and Switzerland" in the search box and find 372 articles. She will need to spell out the word "and".

Ashtyn Reilly's topic is mental health centers. If she is interested in community mental health centers, she will find 211 articles in Public Administration/Affairs . She should enter all 4 words together on line one of the search box since this is a subject phrase. Many, though not all, of the articles will be available in full text. There are some interesting articles on daycare centers for the mentally ill in Cochrane Library Ashtyn should enter the words "mental center".

Kimberlee will find full text articles in Professional Development Collection using the terms "hospice [AND] children" and "palliative [AND] children". (Remember to put these key terms on separate lines.) Project Muse has 164 full text articles from a humanistic perspective. Use the terms "palliative care [AND] children". Medical and Nursing Collection Full Text has many articles, 3 of which are specifically on the Butterfly Program. Journals@Ovid has 4 articles on the Butterfly Program. Use the terms "Butterfly Program" [AND] oncology". CancerNet has many cutting edge articles using the keywords "palliative care children". The Initiative for Pediatric Palliative Care http://www.ippcweb.org/ has materials and videos.

For Maggey PubMed Central has more than 2,000 full text articles on rural health care including 372 articles on rural health issues in Colorado. The keywords "rural health Colorado" will bring these up.

Jodi will find out about the business end of oncology clinics in Business Insights and General Business File ASAP . Try two separate searches. In one search use the term "oncology services". Try a second search with "oncology clinics". Journals@Ovid has 439 articles. Jodi will want to look at some of Kimberlee's resources as well.

Emerald Full Text has 33 full text articles for Alexis. Enter "physicians assistants" on line one and "job satisfaction" on line 2.

LexisNexis Academic has 863 law review articles on nursing homes and patient rights for Angela, Nicole, Love, and Kevin. Click on the "legal" tab and select "law reviews". Type "nursing homes and patient rights" in the blank box. (You will need to spell out the word "and")

Medline (Thomson) has 444 articles for Kevin on mobile clinics. Many, though not all, are full text. Kevin could add "United States" to search line two or he could browse articles for mobile clinics in many countries. Since Kevin's topic as he described it was "travelling medicine", he could also try searches for visiting nurses or home healthcare. Health Reference Center Academic has 409 full text articles on home healthcare, 25 articles on mobile clinics, and 137 articles on visiting nurses. In the last two instances many, but not all, will be full text.

Brenda will want to share Kevin's resources.

Alayna may want to look at General Business File ASAP for articles on MRSA as they affect facilities and their bottom lines. MRSA brings up over 900 articles, so Alayna will want to customize her search. Perhaps "MRSA" on line one and "hospitals" on line two of the search box? Other possible combinations--colleges and MRSA, schools and MRSA, MRSA and prevention, etc. SCIRUS is another good database. Since MRSA brings up more than 7,000 articles, Alayna should focus this search as well.

Kamette and Jarred Miller may like Public Administration/Affairs . She can enter the phrase "single payer health insurance" on line one of the search box. (Normally we would break out our key words on separate lines but not in this case.) General Business File (see above) also has articles. Left Index has some interesting articles on "universal healthcare". Enter this term on line one and "United States" on line two. Select the "all words" option. Does Kamette want to know what the next presidential administration has in mind for health care reform? Annaliese will need to focus her topic of "chronic disease centers". For example, she could choose "renal clinics", "long term care facilities", "diabetes clinics", etc. Health Reference Center Academic has some fine full text articles. History Matters has source documents, reputable websites, and more on westward expansion for Ashlee Johnson. The tried-and-true America: History and Life will also serve Ashlee well.

Project Muse has many articles for Kelsey Brown on Harry Truman. She can use the easy search box to type "Truman, Harry S. and McCarthyism", "Truman, Harry S. and communism", "Truman Doctrine", etc. American Rhetoric will have several full-text speeches of Harry Truman. Scripps Library and Multimedia Archive is a truly unique collection of material on U.S. public policy. The Library's multimedia archive includes more than 2,500 hours of secret White House recordings, hundreds of presidential oral history interviews, and documents related to the executive branch of American government. "Truman, Harry S." will bring up primary sources related to that president as well as all the references to Truman made by succeeding presidents. (See also references below for Kelsey Lasher)

American Presidency has campaign materials and memorabilia from the the 1800 Presidential Campaign for Kelsey Lasher. American Presidency Project is another very interesting site. Try the "elections" tab and other links. Biographical Directory of the United States Congress will give Kelsey information about Jefferson and Adams before the presidency. Kelsey will find a really impressive bibliography and other links.

Country Reports on Human Rights Avalon Project and Sociological Abstracts have information on the Rape of Nanking for Rachel Oster. She should use the search "Nanking and World War II".

Avalon Project has source documents and state papers from the reign of Henry VIII, including references to his wives. Defining Gender has some interesting source documents that add color to the Tudor period for Raili Cerrone. She should simply type "Henry VIII" on the search line.

Whitehouse.gov has information for Pam Bondi on Eleanor Roosevelt. She should look at the First Ladies pages. American Rhetoric will have a number of speeches by Eleanor Roosevelt. History and Culture ES has many digital images and artifacts of the First Lady. Contemporary Women's Issues (CWI) will have many fine articles on that astonishing lady.

For Alejandro Ojeda, the tried-and-true resources like Historical Abstracts may still be best. Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) will have information to be found by typing "Russian Revolution and intervention" on the basic search line. (Spell out the word 'and'). Sage: an Online Journal Collection also has information.

Computer Database has articles on women in I.T. for Grace Gilmore. She should type "women and careers" on the basic search line. Since the whole database is specific to computer science, she does not have to add the words information technology. National Center for Women in Information Technology is another resource. Here is a list of associations for women in information technology. Don't forget the expert interview is another research resource.

Philosopher's Index has 194 articles for Meredith Hudson. She should type "postmodernism" on line one of the search box and "feminism" on line two.

Left Index will have articles on radical feminism for Paige Burns. Paige should type both words as a subject phrase on line one of the search box. Left Index includes not only standard scholarly titles but alternative press publications and lesser known journals that may have a different take on the topic. Sage: an Online Journal Collection will have many articles on the topic.

Avalon Project Country Reports on Human Rightsand United Nations Statistical Databases will have information on gender and violence for Alisa Velonis. At http://www.senate.gov she will find the full text testimony of expert witnesses on gender and violence.

NCJRS.gov has many resources on sexual predators for Ashley McKee. For example, the search "sexual predators and treatment" produces 30 reputable websites, 64 article abstracts, and 156 links to other useful sources.

GenderWatch (Proquest) has lots of good articles on pornography. The database service will suggest subtopics, such as "personal relationships and pornography", from which our student can choose.

Social Services Abstracts has articles for Kseniya Bakhtiu on acculturation and depression. She may want to use the third line of the search box to specify a particular group of immigrants.

Social Services Abstracts has 189 articles for Jordan Glaude on grandparents raising grandchildren. She should type "grandparents" on line 1, "caregivers" on line 2, and "grandchildren" on line 3. PsycINFO has a lot of articles on children and grief for Cristen Calamari. Enter "children" on line 1, "grief" on line 2, and change the pull-down boxes to "Keyword". Jerbonian will find 7,000 articles on women and body image inPsycINFO . Contemporary Women's Issues (CWI) has 206 articles. She should enter body image on line 1 of the search and women on line 2. She may want to consider further focusing her topic. For example, African American women AND body image or girls AND body image, etc. Perhaps the media's influence on body image? Health Topics (U.S. National Library of Medicine) has a demographic category of seniors that will help Deborah Roth home in on health care for the elderly. PAIS International (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts) focuses on policy and communities. Since it is international in its scope, she could compare U.S. policy with other countries or just focus on the U.S.

Renee Gillespy will find much information on her topic of rape and warfare. USA Search contains thousands of documents on rape and warfare, drawing data from U.S. and foreign governmental agencies. Country Reports on Human Rights (U.S. Department of State) is another excellent source.GenderWatch (Proquest) has 84 articles on the topic. Avalon Project has an interesting collection of source documents.

Robert Levy will find 155 full text articles on neglected teens in Criminology Full-Text Collection (Sage). He should enter teenagers on line one of the search box and neglect on line 2.

Josh Brossman will find 220 full text articles on ADHD and teenagers in EBSCO Access to the ERIC. He should remember to break out these key terms on separate lines.

Keeley Morris will find 45 articles in PsycARTICLES (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts) . She should enter the term teenage suicide on line 1 of the search box. Professional Development Collection will have 60 articles using the same search strategy.

Mary Alice will find articles such as: Developing the Health Care Workforce: A Comparison of Two Work-Based Learning Models in EBSCO Access to the ERIC database. She should enter concept mapping on line one of the search box and nursing on line 2. CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health) will have 154 articles and Emerald Full Text will have 164. She should do a second search using the terms nursing students and assessment. She should be cautioned not to try to stuff too much into one search or she may get nothing.

Nicole Herman will find 167 articles in Wiley Interscience on the wisdom of indigenous people concerning climate change. She should enter the search indigenous and climate change. Abstracts in Anthropology has 3 articles using those terms and GeoRef has 17 articles using the terms indigenous people and climate change. Another accepted term is ethnometeorology but I did not have much luck with that. Nicole may want to give it a try in WorldCat

Meredith Hudson will find information on abortion politics during the Bush era in GenderWatch . Enter the site by clicking on the "continue" button and enter the search "George Bush and abortion". There are 59 articles. Contemporary Women's Issues (CWI) has 12 articles. Enter George Bush on line one and abortion on line 2. LexisNexis Congressional will have entries too. Use the single term abortion. Select the Congress to be searched. The Bush era covered the 107th Congress till the inauguration. Campus Research (Westlaw) has a beautifully annotated section on Roe v. Wade, including all the recent challenges during the Bush years. Click on the "law" tab and look in the left margin under "famous documents". Health Reference Center Academic has 37 articles.

Susan McPartland can use several resources for her topic of critical geography.GEOBASE has 174 articles to be found using critical geography as a subject term. (change the pull-down menu) Left Index (Biblioline) has 20 articles to be found by typing "critical geography" in quotes. Library of Economics and Liberty has 31 articles and book references. Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management has 4 articles.

Duncan McBogg will find 2,700 articles using the search term screen capture in Engineering Village .

Shaina Stephenson will find articles on sex education in EBSCO Access to the ERIC. Since there are 756 articles, she will need to focus her topic. For example, she could put "abstinence" in line 2 of the search box.

Social Services Abstracts will have articles for Birhan Abruha, Anthony Gonzalez, Jessica Aragon, Becky Madison, and John Morarie on their topics of teenagers and drug abuse and teenagers and alcohol. Many, though not all, are instantly available in full text. Others can be had with a few extra steps. Toxnet will have entries on "designer drugs" and "club drugs" in the Hazardous Substance Databank. Some entries are book chapters but others are peer-reviewed scholarly articles.

Sociological Abstracts may appeal to Rosa Villalobos for her topic. She will find 64 articles if she enters teenagers on line one of the search and immigrants on line 2. Don't forget about Interlibrary Loan Service for those articles that are not immediately available.

Emely Hernandez and Nellie Dones will find information on their topic. ICPSR ,the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), maintains and provides access to an archive of social science data. There are 1,000 entries on teen pregnancy. EBSCO Access to the ERIC database has many full-text articles using the search term early parenthood. This search can be customized by using the second line of the search box. For example: early parenthood and income, early parenthood and educational attainment. The Mythology of Homelessness

According to Greek mythology, Zeus and Hermes disguised themselves as poor travelers and went to the land of Phrygia. They sought shelter but were turned away by everyone except an old couple, Philemon and his wife, Baucis. They gladly shared what little food they had with the gods. Zeus granted them two wishes as a reward for their hospitality. They asked to serve as priest and priestess to the gods and asked that when their time came that they die together. When they died, Baucis and Philemon were transformed into trees with intertwining branches and their humble home became a temple.

In another story, the goddess Demeter disguised herself as a poor, old woman. The daughters of Keleos took her into their home and showed her great kindness. Demeter thus became the benevolent goddess of the hearth. Athena, too, was known to disguise herself as a poor transient and rewarded those who aided her.

Lance will find 1,000 full text articles on meditation in Project Muse . He should type "meditation and psychology" in the search box. (Lance should spell out the word "and")

CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health) will have a few hundred articles for Tristin Perkins who is interested in nursing. She could use the search term "psychiatric nursing" for example. Don't forget to mark the full text box, Tristin!

Auraria Library ESL Guide

Once They Finish the Ceiling… There is an urban legend that somewhere out there is a parking garage that looks like a library. Die-hard conspiracy theorists are convinced that the blueprints for the Auraria Library were intentionally switched. Others claim that on the day the library ceiling is finished, the Broncos will once again win the Super Bowl. People have been waiting 30 years for the ceiling to be done. In actuality, the raw concrete and exposed ductwork which characterize the Auraria Library are hallmarks of the Industrial High Tech Style of architecture. The library was designed by the famous architect, Helmut Jahn who won a prestigious award for his work. Mr. Jahn returned to Denver long enough to accept the award and, wisely, left town immediately thereafter, never to be seen again.

Sex and The Library There is a common misperception that libraries are boring, soporific places. The September, 1977 “Campus Issue” of Playboy Magazine awarded honorable mention to the Auraria Library. The private second floor study rooms were named “best place on campus to have sex”. Just in case you were thinking about a study break, those rooms have been turned into faculty offices and the new study rooms have no locks thanks to Playboy.

Library Ghosts For whatever reason, libraries seem to attract ghosts. I encountered a notable one while working at the old Westminster Library. The staff offices and a reading room were located in the basement. Since we had been having trouble with the public using our staff computers, we put a note on the office door which read, “Keep this door closed at all times.” One evening shortly before closing, I was alone in the basement office when the door slammed shut. I do not mean the door was off plumb and swung shut. It was as though a large and very angry person had taken hold of the knob with both hands and yanked with all his or her might. I immediately jerked open the door to see who did this and found the reading room outside empty. There was no way anyone could have sprinted to the stairs that quickly nor was there anyplace to hide in the open reading room. I can only conclude that it was a ghostly stickler for rules who felt the closed door sign should be obeyed at all costs. And yes, apparitions have passed through the Auraria Library as well… but that is another story for another day...

A Library Crime Long before full-text journals were available electronically, libraries archived back issues on microfilm and microfiche. The oldest films were sheets of plastic coated with silver halide gel on which the image was imprinted. Eventually, of course, the silver tarnished, making the film even harder to read. Another unusual fact about the Auraria Library is that it was designed and built completely without air conditioning. Mr. Jahn’s design had many windows for ventilation. Unfortunately, they all had to be bolted shut because patrons were stealing books by throwing them out the windows. One hot, summer morning the Periodicals Librarian arrived to find the microfiche drawers filled with viscous, slimy goo. The police were called since it was believed that some heinous act of vandalism had been perpetrated. As it turned out, the building got so hot, the gel melted right off the plastic. Air conditioning was later installed.

Understanding library jargon, terms such asOPAC, CD-ROM, microfiche, holdings, or stacks, can be difficult for anyone who is not a regular user of the library. The difficulty is compounded for English as a Second Language speakers who must process these specialized terms in a language that is not their native one. Educational CyberPlayground has 77 articles on discipline for Tamicka. She should click on "Search Now" and enter the simple term "discipline".

Iman is researching ancestors, i.e. geneology. DPL Western History/Genealogy Department has some fine resources, both online through this link and at the Denver library. Census.gov and National Archives and Records Administration may also have some things for him.

Lourdes will find 162 full text articles on media influence in Communication and Mass Media Complete . She should enter "mass media" on line one of the search box ,"society" on line 2, and "influence" on line 3. Be sure to mark the "full text" box. Sociological Abstracts also has many articles using this same search strategy. AlterNet , which covers alternative press publications, may give these ladies a different perspective on the topic.

Nathan may like GlobalSpec for his topic of Audio Recording. He can use the easy keyword search box to look up "audio recording", "audio mixers", "sound engineering", etc. to read about equipment and engineering advances. Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA)
is a website with sections on piracy and other current issues, a photo gallery, marketing data, and the industry awards. Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)
EFF is a nonprofit group working focused on digital rights. There is a section which advocates for legalizing music file-sharing.

Hector's topic is biology. This is a broad subject. However, he may want to check out Biome database. He should click on "hot topics" for such interesting topics as food security, amphibians, science and the media, etc.

Juan's topic of diversity is also quite broad. He can go to our Database Page. On the blank line he can type in diversity and see the many interesting databases we have available.

Christine will find many interesting full text articles on the stock market crash in In the First Person . She should type" Stock Market Crash October 29 1929". Avalon Project also has many things. In this database she should just type "Stock Market Crash".

ScienceDirect will have articles on the Scientific Revolution for Kabina. If she is interested in learning about the original scientific revolution of the 1700s, she should type "scientific revolution" on line one of the search box and "history of" on line 2.

Literary Books @ the Auraria Library

Begin at the "Book Search" line. To locate a book by a particular author, select "author" from the pull-down menu. Enter the author, last name first, on the blank line provided. To locate a book by title, select "title" from the pull-down menu and type the title of the book on the blank line. To locate books about an author and his or her work, select "keyword" from the pull-down. "Type in the author, last name first, and add the words criticism and interpretation. Next try a "subject search" and enter the author as a subject, last name first. You may notice additional subject headings tacked on after the author's name such as "sources", "influence", or "study guides". These books would also provide analyses of the author's work. You may notice a date after the author's name. This is the date of his or her birth and can be helpful to distinguish between authors with the same name.

Books in Languages Other than English

Using the "Book Search" line on the Auraria Home Page, type in the title, author, or subject to be requested and hit "go". When a list of titles appears, use the limit/sort button and pull down language menu to select works in a language other than English. If a book is not owned in the Auraria Library, hit the Search Prospector button to see if you can order it from another Colorado library. If not, interlibrary loan service is available.

Search the World
Sometimes it is necessary to go further afield to find literary works. WorldCat contains millions of book records from libraries around the world. Nearly all of them are available by clicking on the Interlibrary Loan link in the WorldCat entry.

Cambridge Collections Online covers literature, poetry, theater, philosophy, religion, historical topics, and culture. CCO includes scholarly writings covering major authors, artists, philosophers, topics, and time periods. Addressing subjects and figures as diverse as Gothic Fiction and Arabic Philosophy, Tom Stoppard and Martin Luther, Jane Austin and Stravinsky, the online collection contains 1000's of downloadable essays with a chronology and guide to further reading.

Harold will find many good articles on his topic of Christianity and homosexuality. He will hit the jackpot in a database called Project Muse . There are 1,259 really excellent full text articles to be found by typing Christian on line one of the search box and homosexuality on line two. CQ Researcher plus Archive has some interesting information packets which can be brought up by typing "Christianity and sexuality" in the search box. Reports on sex education and same sex marriage are just a few which represent the religious perspective. Sacred Texts Archive is another excellent source. In the left hand margin is a long list of topics. Harold needs only to click on the LGTB link. Sacred Texts Archive has a Google-style search which is also very easy to use. LGBT Life w/Full Text is the premier resource to the world's literature regarding Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Transsexual issues.

Lilly and Layla could take their topic of African American women's sexuality in a number of interesting directions. They will find 315 full text articles on African American women and sexuality in Ethnic NewsWatch . PsycINFO has 283 articles using the terms African American women on line one of the search box, sexuality on line two, and United States on line three. Many, though not all, the articles are full text. MLA International Bibliography has 48 very interesting articles on African American women's sexuality as portrayed in literature. Left Index has 112 articles on the politics of sex as it applies to African American women. Lilly and Layla should select "boolean search" from the drop-down menu and type "African American women and sexuality". Full text articles are denoted in bold-face blue type.

Harold, Lilly, and Layla may want to read excerpts from the novels of E. Lynn Harris . Harris writes masterfully about African American sexuality and homosexuality.

Shawn's research is focused on heterosexual men. Health Reference Center Academic has 93 full text articles on heterosexual men's health issues. Shawn simply needs to enter the words "heterosexual men" in the search box.

Jessica will find 26 articles in Health Reference Center Academic using the terms “long term relationship AND “sexual” (She will need to type in the word “and”) PsycINFO has 164 articles. Many, but not all, are full text. Enter “long term relationships” on line one of the search box and “sexual” on line 2. The articles which are full text will have the words “full text” under the entry.

All cultures and societies are characterized by dichotomy, the eternal disconnect between belief and behavior. Nowhere is that more evident than in the arena of sexual relations. A people's folktales are a unique window into the collective psyche and mores of a culture or country. If you were to talk to a person from Thailand, he or she would no doubt tell you that marital infidelity and promiscuity are not aspects of Thai values. And yet, this very funny Thai folk story would have us believe otherwise...

Once there was a farmer who had a young and beautiful wife. Each day when the farmer went off to the fields, it was his wife's custom to disport herself with village men under a banyan tree. One day the farmer came home early for his noon meal and caught his wife in a lover's embrace.

"Wife," he roared, "You shall not put the horns on my head. Wait here while I fetch my sword and I shall kill you both!"

Now, the wife was as clever as she was beautiful. Thinking quickly, she said,

"Husband, you accuse me wrongly. When you realize your mistake you will be embarrassed. You see," she said, "This is a magic tree. It has the power to make a person see things which are not real. Let me show you. Climb to the very top of this big tree and look down."

As the farmer disappeared into the branches, the wife and her paramour lay down under the tree and proceeded to make merry once more. When the farmer looked down, he was dismayed.

"My poor wife!" he cried. "I have accused that good woman of horrid things. It does, indeed, look as though she is having coitus with that man. I shall climb down and apologize at once!"

The tree was a large one with many branches. By the time the husband had reached the ground, the wife and her lover had arranged their clothing and were sitting demurely under the tree.

"My good woman, can you ever forgive?" asked the husband.

"We'll see," said the wife smiling chastely.

And so the couple lived happily ever after and to a great old age and the husband was none the wiser.

QUESTIONS TO ASK

Who is the author?

What are the author's credentials for writing the book if it is nonfiction? What life experiences, beliefs, biases, and cultural contexts does the author bring to his or her work, be it fiction or nonfiction?

If the author is famous or critically acclaimed, try Biographies Plus Illustrated, Contemporary Authors , or follow the biography link. If the author is a popular writer or does not have a wide audience, look for a book review What Do I Read Next?. Book reviews and readers' services frequently have information about the author as well as about the book. Biographical Information , the people search feature of Lexis, is another database where you may find information. Has the author been interviewed on radio or television? Go to LexisNexis Academic and mark the box for television and radio transcripts to get a copy of the interview. Google the author's name. One can uncover an astonishing and eclectic trove of interesting information about a person. Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) includes Writer's Directory which has information about authors, including the address where you may contact the writer directly. To what organizations does the writer belong? The Encyclopedia of Associations will tell you more about these organizations. When was the publication written and what were the times like? Timelines Index , America's Newspapers , America: History and Life ,or Historical Abstracts can tell you what was going on in politics, the arts, the economy, or society that may have influenced the author's writing. The link at left will list many more historical sources. Does the writer bring a particular ethnic or cultural perspective to his or her work? Databases like Chicano Database , eHRAF World Cultures , or Ethnic NewsWatch may give you insight into the culture or ethic group from which the author hails. If the book is an academic one, what are the author's credentials? Digital Dissertations may give you a summary of the author's academic dissertation or thesis. Subject databases in the author's field will list other scholarly contributions of the author. These might include journal articles, papers presented, books, or chapters. The National Faculty Directory (REF LB 2331.7 N37) may be able to tell you if the writer is associated with a college or university.

What is the purpose of the book, publication, blog, or website?

Was the publication written merely to inform the reader? Is it meant as entertainment? Was the author’s intent to sway or persuade the reader to a particular point of view? Does the author want the reader to do something as a result of reading his or her work? Does the writer want the reader to vote for a particular candidate, purchase a product, start a business, adopt a foster child, save the whales, or otherwise be moved to action?

A critical reader may want to check the facts the writer has put forth and, more importantly, the author’s interpretation of those facts. LexisNexis Statistical (formerly Statistical Universe) contains over 30,000 statistical tables from the U.S. government agencies, state governments; and major international intergovernmental organizations. It also indexes thousands of additional statistics from these government agencies as well as independent professional, trade, and research organizations; universities; and commercial publishers. A Statistics guide prepared by the library contains an extensive list of statistical compendiums. Damned Lies and Statistics: untangling numbers from the media, politicians, and activists by Joel Best (2nd Floor HM 535 B4 2001) is a lively guide to spotting bad statistics and learning to think critically about these influential numbers. Has the author provided a complete and accurate bibliography of sources consulted so the reader may retrace the writer's footsteps? If the publication is a blog or website has the author provided links to other reputable websites? When was the last time the website was updated? What have other writer's written on the same topic? CQ Researcher plus Archive database covers two, three, four, or more sides of an issue. AlterNet , an alternative press database, may give you a different slant on a topic. Congressional Hearings are a valuable and often overlooked resource. Congress solicits testimony from expert witnesses on all sides of an issue. Check Auraria's Skyline catalog for hearings on your topic.

Who is the intended audience?

Does the work appear in a scholarly journal or in a popular magazine? The link at left will help you tell the difference. If you are researching a book, is the publishing house a scholarly one or a popular press? Writer's Market (REF PN 161 W83) can tell you more about a publishing entity and its intended audience. Lifestyle Market Analyst (REF HC 106.8 L5) and Simmons Study of Media and Markets (REF HF 5415.2 S8) can tell you a bit more about the readers of specific newspapers and periodicals. HispanSource can do the same for Hispanic readers. Reader services such as Amazon.com can tell you what other titles fans of your chosen book are also buying.
If you are still having trouble determining audience, here are a few more questions to ask. What is the tone of the writing? Does the author write in an immediate and intimate first person? Or doe the writer make more formal use of the third person? What type of vocabulary and writing style does the author employ?

Who is the reader?

That would be you! What experiences, knowledge, biases, or unique views do you bring to the work?

Myths About Government Documents...

Myth #1: Documents are Propaganda

Government Publications are written or commissioned by career service employees who are experts in their fields, not by politicians. A young lawyer named Felix Cohen was one such employee who began working for the government in the 1930's. He wrote a text called Handbook of Federal Indian Law. Sounds boring, doesn't it? Actually, it was so controversial that Mr. Cohen received death threats. He wrote his treatise on Native American rights at a time when politicians and their rich and powerful cronies wanted to push the tribes out of Oklahoma to get the oil there. In spite of the political climate, the handbook was published by the Department of the Interior and printed by the Government Printing Office in Washington. It remains the preeminent work on federal Indian law.

Myth #2: Books and articles are better resources than government documents
Actually, many books and articles are based on research which originally appeared in government documents! Sociologist Samuel Coleman was not a government employee. However, the government commissioned him to do educational research. His report was titled Equality of Educational Opportunity and eventually became known simply as the Coleman Report. This government document would pave the way for the landmark decision in Brown v. the Board of Education, school desegregation, and busing. It would cause riots and result in the calling out of the National Guard. More than 1,200 books and more than 16,000 articles were written based on Coleman's research. What do you think of documents now?

Myth #3: Documents are inaccessible
Some people think documents are hidden away and access to them intentionally obscured to keep government business secret. All documents in the Auraria Library can be easily found using our Skyline catalog. The open stacks are light and airy and browsing is encouraged. Most government publications can be checked out and all Federal Depository items are copyright free.
